The GrunkleGuru

Grunkle is a slang term for the thick rough on a golf course that I have been using for many years. Given my penchant for inaccurate tee balls, I have become a bit of a guru out of the thick stuff, hence the name. This is a site for my random thoughts about sports (espeically golf) and life in general. While nothing special, it will hopefully offer a break from the daily drudgery for both you and me.

Dropping A Dime On The Vegas Action

First, thanks to everyone that is coming here for the first time thanks to The Big Link. I apologize for the lack of posting this week, but I was in Las Vegas for business and never even got a chance to fire up my computer. Anyway, here are some quick thoughts on the trip.

- Congratulations to UNC for their championship. If the refs had not taken the game over late in the first half, I would have won the over and some big money. Instead I broke even.

- If you are looking for a place to stay in Vegas, might I suggest The Flamingo. Reasonable rooms, friendly staff, in the middle of everything, cool natural area (complete with flamingos and penguins), and it also has the history of being built by Bugsy Seagal.

- When the time comes in life that money is not the object that it currently is, I would love to stay at Bellagio or at the Venetian (most likely the Venitian). Both of these places take opulence to a new level.

- Speaking of opulence, there is a lot of buzz on the strip about Wynn’s new self-named casino, Wynn. It will be interesting to see what $2.6billion can buy. One of the rumors that I can confirm is that there will be a Ferrari as well as a Maserati dealership on the premises. Talk about potential buyer remorse.

- Betting on horses based on names and numbers works just as well as looking at a racing form (at least for idiots such as myself)

- Speaking of racing forms, I consider myself a pretty smart individual, but those racing forms are a completely different language.

- For table games, Three-Card Poker is fun, roulette is good with a large group, and craps…well, crap. I set a goal of learning how to play this game and I did, but if you run into three or four shooters with cold hands you can drop some money really quick.

- Low limit poker in Vegas is easy money in my opinion. At least I have been successful at that during my stays in Vegas. As long as you have a good table with at least two drunken idiots, it is like taking candy from a baby. You won’t get rich, but it definitely beats losing.

- Slot machines are evil creations. I don’t know what it is about them, but for some reason you always think that they are due. I have found the best thing to do is put in some, but not all of your money and play until you either double up or lose what’s in there. Then reset the machine. Don’t know if it works, but seems to control the bleeding a little bit.

- Got to see Hootie and the Blowfish at a private concert during the week. I have always been a fan of these guys and it is good to see they still put on a great live show. Looking forward to their album this summer.

- Wish I had one more night in town as Jimmy Buffet was playing outdoors at the MGM Grand. Man, do I need to get back to my Parrothead ways.

That just about covers Vegas. It is a fun town, but a week is just too long. Oh yeah, the main reason I went out was for a trade show. Well, I got to pat myself on the back as it went very well for the company. I’m starting to think that I am pretty good at this tradeshow stuff.
