The GrunkleGuru

Grunkle is a slang term for the thick rough on a golf course that I have been using for many years. Given my penchant for inaccurate tee balls, I have become a bit of a guru out of the thick stuff, hence the name. This is a site for my random thoughts about sports (espeically golf) and life in general. While nothing special, it will hopefully offer a break from the daily drudgery for both you and me.

Guru's Wacky Weekend

Well, the weekend has ended, and thankfully, I am none the worse for the wear. A little sore, and a little light in the pocket, but I’ll survive. For those of you that come here for the golf updates we had a wild one this weekend that I will comment on shortly. For now, let’s delve into my life a little bit.

Friday night was poker night. We try to get together every couple of weeks, and have about 8 – 10 regulars so it is a good table. This week was a tough one for me. First hand of the night I get dealt top full house and bet the snot out of it only to lose to a four of a kind by CM. That one hurt.

For the next few hours to say I could not catch a hand would be an understatement. In fact, the first two hands that I actually took a piece of the pot on I lost money. That is the downfall of Omaha Hi-Lo; there is a strong chance you will get quartered when you only have the low to play. Finally, things turned around towards the end of the night and I managed to claw back to around even. I don’t mind losing a few bucks like I did this week, but I sure do enjoy spending my friends’ money as opposed to my own. Congrats to JW as he was clearly the big winner of the night.

Yesterday was opening day for the Barstool Softball league here in town. I am playing for the Flatiron this year and it marks my return to the softball diamond after a three-year hiatus. The Flat team (we’re still looking for a nickname so suggestions are welcome) was put together at the last minute and most of us were meeting each other for the first time, and it showed. We have to get a better grasp of the rules, and work on our batting order, but I must say I think we are in for a solid season, even after our 13 – 4 defeat at the hands of McCoul’s.

How did the Guru do you ask? Well, I did not make as Ass of myself so I consider the day a roaring success. No errors in the field, 2 – 3 at the plate with two doubles and two RBI. I’ll keep you all posted on the wacky adventures we will surely face as we venture into the world of competitive softball. If nothing else, this team will be a lot of fun.
